Project Title: The Socks - Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, Victorian Fashion
Project Description:
These wool mohair machine-knitted socks are a blend of whimsy, history, and comfort, inspired by the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland and the intricate details of Victorian fashion. The stripe pattern—soft blue and gray hues—echoes the playful spirit of Alice, while the texture and rhythm of the stripes are drawn from the mischievous Cheshire Cat. The use of color and pattern captures Alice's journey through Wonderland, combining the lightness of her character with the mysterious, ever-shifting nature of the world she navigates.
The decision to use 100% mohair wool speaks directly to both comfort and sustainability. Mohair, a natural fiber known for its softness, breathability, and lightness, was selected not only for its luxurious feel but also for its minimal environmental impact. As a renewable material, it offers a sustainable alternative to synthetic fibers, contributing to a slow fashion approach. These socks are designed to bring comfort, much like the sense of ease Alice felt amidst the strange and ever-changing world around her.
A particular focus of this project was on Victorian sock fashion—specifically what Queen Victoria might have worn on her wedding day. Through research in historical archives, I discovered images of delicate, light socks that reflected the lavish yet intricate approach to Victorian undergarments. The lightweight mohair was chosen to replicate this fine, ethereal texture while maintaining warmth and practicality.
Incorporating elements of both fantasy and history, these socks serve as a tactile journey, inviting the wearer into a space where comfort, nostalgia, and sustainability intersect.
