Project Title: Machine-Knit Dress – Mohair Wool
Project Description:
This machine-knit dress takes inspiration from both the fantastical world of Alice in Wonderland and the quiet simplicity of Victorian undergarments. Constructed from 100% lace-weight mohair wool, the garment carries an ethereal softness—light, sheer, and comforting, like the dreamlike state Alice drifts into. Its transparency and delicacy reference historical underpinnings, garments meant to be hidden, here reimagined as something to be seen and layered.
The dress is worked in a black and cream palette, a combination that nods to the original book illustrations by Sir John Tenniel while echoing the playful contrast of the Tweedles. The mohair’s natural sheen enhances this interplay of light and dark, giving the fabric depth and movement while maintaining its inherent airiness and warmth.
Choosing mohair was also an act of sustainability. As a natural, biodegradable fiber, mohair not only provides exceptional softness and durability, but it also reflects a commitment to materials that respect the environment. By focusing on natural fibers, this piece champions the principles of slow fashion—garments designed for longevity, versatility, and thoughtful consumption.
Designed for layering and versatility, the dress can be worn as a delicate overlay or as a foundation piece, transforming depending on how it is styled. Its adaptability reflects a broader philosophy: garments should live beyond a single function, allowing for creativity, comfort, and individuality in wear.
The Machine-Knit Dress is both a technical study and a narrative garment: a reflection of heritage and imagination, softness and structure, and history reinterpreted through a sustainable, contemporary lens.
