Project Title: Knitted Bonnet – Repurposed Wool
Project Description:
This bonnet is a modern reinterpretation of Victorian knitwear, inspired by the hoods and head coverings once worn by women and children in the 19th century. While it references history, its design has been updated for the present: a practical, well-fitted winter accessory that merges warmth, style, and sustainability.
The piece is hand-crafted from repurposed second-hand wool, giving new life to materials that might otherwise go to waste. Two different strands of wool have been knitted together, producing an unpredictable variegated texture that celebrates chance and uniqueness in the making process. The result is a fabric with depth, subtle shifts of tone, and a sense of individuality that cannot be replicated.
A prominent hand-tied bow at the front adds both function and charm, making the bonnet easy to wear while enhancing its visual identity. Its soft dusty mauve pink hue was chosen deliberately: expressive enough to stand out in the muted palette of winter, yet gentle and versatile enough to complement a range of outfits.
This piece is a reflection of my belief that design should merge heritage with responsibility. By using reclaimed materials and traditional knitting techniques, the bonnet honors the art of slow fashion while offering a timeless accessory for today’s wardrobes. It is at once nostalgic and modern, sustainable and stylish—crafted to add both warmth and character to the season.
